Philosophy, Aim and Objectives

The Department of Public Health is guided by the belief that health is a fundamental human right and that prevention is the most effective approach to ensuring sustainable well-being. We believe in a multidisciplinary, community-based approach to health promotion that empowers individuals and communities to take control of their health. Education, research, and service form the backbone of our philosophy.

Aims and Objectives

The aims and objectives of a degree in Public Health is to

  • To train professionals capable of designing and implementing effective public health programs.
  • To promote preventive healthcare through education, advocacy, and community engagement.
  • To equip students with the skills to analyze and solve public health problems using evidence-based approaches.
  • To foster research that addresses local, national, and global health issues.
  • To prepare graduates for careers in public, private, and non-governmental health sectors.

 

Admission Requirement

Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

Candidates who wish to study Public Health must have obtained a credit in Mathematics and English Language plus credit pass in physics, chemistry, biology and other two subjects at the SSCE, NECO, GCE or their equivalent not more than two sittings.

Direct Entry

Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five credit passes in the SSCE, NECO, GCE or equivalents of which at least two shall be at advanced level, or four credit passes of which at least three shall be at advanced level provided that such passes are not counted at both levels of the examinations. For emphasis, credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology which are all compulsory.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT

Graduation Requirements

In order to qualify for graduation from any of the undergraduate degree programmes in the Department,  the student must have met the following requirements:

a) Been duly admitted for the degree programme.

b) Been matriculated into the University.

c) Passed all compulsory and required courses in the programme of study, as well as elective courses.

d) Accumulated the minimum number of credit units prescribed for the award of the degree.

e) Successfully completed and submitted a Research Project report.

f) Obtained a CGPA of not less than 1.50.
