The inception of the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) dates back to 1973, initiated by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF). This program operates as a tripartite collaboration involving students, universities, and industries. Funding is provided by the Federal Government of Nigeria, and the coordination is a joint effort between the ITF and the National Universities Commission (NUC). SIWES serves as a skill training initiative, strategically designed to acquaint and prepare tertiary institution students for the practical realities of the industrial work environment post-graduation. Beyond theoretical knowledge, the scheme offers students the valuable opportunity to familiarize themselves with and gain exposure to the hands-on experience of handling various equipment and machinery.

Objectives of SIWES:
- To provide an avenue for students in institutions of higher learning to acquire industrial skills and experience in their course of study.
- To prepare students for work situations they are likely to meet after graduation.
- To expose students to work methods and techniques for handling equipment and machinery that may not be available in their institutions.
- To make the transition from school to the world of work easier, and enhance Students’ contacts for later job placement.
- To provide Students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work situations, thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice
- To enlist and strengthen employers’ involvement in the entire educational process of preparing university graduates for employment in industries.
About Dominion University SIWES:
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is an integral part of the academic curriculum at Dominion University.
