Department of Medical Laboratory Science​

Philosophy, Aim and Objectives

The Department of Medical Laboratory Science holds that accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment and healthcare delivery. We believe in training students to be meticulous, ethical, and innovative in applying scientific principles to laboratory practice. The department emphasizes hands-on experience, precision, and adherence to international best practices.

Aims and Objectives

The aims and objectives of a degree in Public Health is to

  • To produce competent medical laboratory scientists skilled in the use of modern diagnostic techniques.
  • To develop professionals with strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • To encourage high ethical standards, accuracy, and professionalism in laboratory practice.
  • To promote research and innovation in medical diagnostics and laboratory management.
  • To prepare graduates for service in hospitals, diagnostic centers, research institutes, and global healthcare systems.
Admission Requirement

Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

Candidates who wish to study Medical Laboratory Science​ must have obtained a credit in Mathematics and English Language plus credit pass in physics, chemistry, biology and other two subjects at the SSCE, NECO, GCE or their equivalent not more than two sittings.

Direct Entry

Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five credit passes in the SSCE, NECO, GCE or equivalents of which at least two shall be at advanced level, or four credit passes of which at least three shall be at advanced level provided that such passes are not counted at both levels of the examinations. For emphasis, credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology which are all compulsory.

Graduation Requirements

In order to qualify for graduation from any of the undergraduate degree programmes in the Department,  the student must have met the following requirements:

a) Been duly admitted for the degree programme.

b) Been matriculated into the University.

c) Passed all compulsory and required courses in the programme of study, as well as elective courses.

d) Accumulated the minimum number of credit units prescribed for the award of the degree.

e) Successfully completed and submitted a Research Project report.

f) Obtained a CGPA of not less than 1.50.
